Delhi oh Delhi ! #madeofgreat

My city of choice is my beloved Delhi, falling under North Zone. Let me think now, how many cities have I seen in my long life of over 50 years? I belong to Delhi, but the cities I have lived in are Mumbai,  Bangalore, Pune, Geneva, Paris, London, Berne, Zurich, Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco, Panjim, Ahmadabad, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, Shimla, Mussoorie, Mandi, Manali, Nainital, Cochin, Tiruvananthapuram, Wellington, Ooty,  Conoor. Kodaikanal, Madurai, Chennai, Kolkata, Allahabad, Nasik, Belgaum. Each is unique, but for me, Delhi is the best in terms of all three-Drive Design and Connect. It truly is “made of great “as epitomized by http://madeofgreat.tatamotors.com/

You may taste the most fabulous cuisines of the world but the ultimate comfort you get from the home-cooked food you have grown up with, cannot be replicated. So is the case with the city you have been born and brought up in. It may not seem great to many, but those who have grown up in it tend to automatically wear rose-tinted glasses when comparing it with any other city.

Over the years, I have witnessed Delhi becoming the melting pot of the country-pulsating with drive; it attracts people from all over, beckoning them to become a part of its throbbing growth. So we have migrants from Bihar, from Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Karnataka who have made Delhi their home and added their vibrancy to the city’s rich tapestry-it is no longer peopled by the rich “haveliwalas” with their leisured lifestyles but with upwardly aspiring youth from all corners of the country, bent upon achieving what they have set out to: maybe higher studies at Delhi University or JNU or a job at an MNC or call center, or the eagerness to learn English and get that passport to the life they want. Kudos to their drive to overcome all   barriers in the way of their progress.

Delhi is also the place where many thousands relocated, leaving all that they had, behind in Pakistan in the aftermath one of the bloodiest partitions in human history. They came penniless but with sheer dint of hard work, set up successful business empires. The drive to succeed in the face of all adversity and ability of overcoming all odds has been the leitmotif of this city from ancient times- it has always had to fight for survival and emerged a winner against numerous invasions right from the days of the Mahabharata.

Which other city can surpass the regal splendor of Rashtrapati Bhavnan, Rajpath and Lyuten’s Delhi? The magnificence of Shanti Path where the High Commissions of all countries are located, would be the envy of any city. No shopping mall can stand competition to the majesty of Connaught Place. Delhi’s design is unique to itself-the aristocratic posh colonies like Golf Links and Nizamuddin rubbing shoulders with the stacks upon stacks of similar-looking Government houses, the identical DDA housing blocks  and the region- specific colonies like Chittaranjan Park(for Bengalis), R. K. Puram teeming with Tamilians! The chance to taste authentic dishes from the four corners of the country is thanks to these colonies-sandesh, shighara and Macher Jhol from Bengal and Littie Chokha fron Bihar, Wazwan of Kashmir, Bisi bele bhaat from Karnataka, all are available in Delhi.

Worth mentioning are also the study-specific student villages-Sarai Kale Khan for IITs, Ber Sarai for IAS aspirants, Rajendra Nagaer for CAs and so on- the design of the city formulates on its own, according to the existing requirement, resulting in a win-win situation for all. Reams can be written about the magnificent historical monuments dotting Delhi from the Red Fort to the Purana Quila, from the Qutub Minar to the Bahai Temple.

The beautiful Design of Delhi can also be seen distinctly in each season not only in the changing colour of the foliage of trees and bushes, the birdsong but even in the wares of the roadside vendors-. The heaps of ripe emerald-green watermelons (with their lovely red slices displayed to literally quench the thirsty eyes of the summer-worn citizens) augur the harsh summer months. You can also see cartloads of cool cucumbers. The roasting corncobs on coal herald the onset of monsoons after a parched hot summer and onset of winters is proclaimed by the mounds of water chestnuts and roasted peanuts, popcorn and gajak.

All other cities in India envy the connectivity of Delhi being easily accessed by air, train, and bus. This is the reason why conferences and exhibitions from all over the world are held regularly in Delhi. With the coming of the Metro-no place is too far now. Even the well-heeled ditch their cars in favour of the metro when it involves long-distance travelling to crowded places. So connectivity whether intra-city, inter-city or internationally, is just superb. The impressive flyovers bypassing the crowded localities of the city have also contributed to cutting down travel time. There are glitches in some places but with time, these too shall be ironed out.

The physical connectivity apart, a lot can be said about people’s connectivity- you can’t come across a real Delhiwala without them wanting to know each detail of your life, your social standing (as evident from your residential address), your family, et all-very different from Mumbai’s professional types where everyone minds their own business.

So Delhi stands top in all three parameters- drive, design and connect!

Stay fit the sweeter way with Dabur Honey

Dabur Honey cover
So many diet formulae are doing the round these days- from the now passé Atkins diet, the once very popular General Motors diet, the only- fruit diet, the only- vegetable diet, the gluten-free diet, the only- liquids diet to all other diets recommended by every Tom Dick or Harry, or if you prefer every Dhruv, Rohit or Raghav. All these well meaning suggestions of so called friends and well wishers do nothing for your self esteem but make you want to dig a deeper hole in which you can hide your burgeoning bulge from the cruel world. When one wonders and stops to think for a moment, one is always prompted to ask the question as to why none of these diets have ever been considered to be the sure fire way of keeping off the kilos permanently and forever staying in shape?
The answer my friends, is not “blowin in the wind” as the famous song goes, but is certainly staring at us in the face. The answer is so simple and so easy to implement that anyone who adopts it is on the way to a much lighter, healthier and shapely self for all times to come. We  know from childhood that all the food groups like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals , vitamins etc. are essential for our bodies to be able to build, repair and function in an optimal manner.
To this end, is it necessary to burden our digestive system with chemicals, ready-to-eat food supplements or energy drinks? The answer is a firm NO. We have to consciously cut from our diet all the food which is full of empty calories. We are fortunate that we have with us a friend to help us do this with ease.
This friend is the Dabur Honey and the Dabur Honey Diet- a diet which is virtually a life saver and wonderful to use in this hot and humid monsoon season when the heavy air is difficult to breathe in due to the excessive heat and humidity. The result is that one tends to drink gallons of soft drinks and colas to quench the enormous thirst pangs (literally!). No need for this anymore, for now you have a trusted friend like Dabur Honey to save you and make you healthier and shapely.
Dabur Honey logo
The efficacy of this friend has been known in our country for ages. Our ancestors also knew its benefits as seen from the fact that a drop of honey is put on a newborn babe’s tongue. Another age-old secret is to start your day with a spoonful of honey in a glass of tepid water for a healthy start to your day – a sweet start to your journey of losing weight.
Sugar just has empty calories and no health benefits whereas honey, besides having vitamins and minerals also has antioxidants and lesser calories. Not only are the natural sugar and carbohydrates in honey easy to digest but also help our digestive system to work better. Your sore throat and cold can also be kept at bay with honey-any day better than chemical drugs with their side effects.
Many other tips can be found at http://www.daburhoney.com which gives you all the information you need to maximize the benefits of honey and the way it can be used in your diet. This, coupled with the maxim that you stick to small portions and have food from all the food groups i.e. a balanced diet, besides going for a forty minutes walk everyday will solve your weight problem. These will be such lifestyle changes and choices which will stand you in good stead for all times to come and you will then realize that a crash diet can never ever give the nutrition your body needs, which a controlled balanced and well thought out diet can.

Ek Naye League

Ek Naye League” certainly makes one wonder what it must be. Surely something in a league of its own……something really out of the ordinary since the iconic Mr.Kapli Dev is promoting it. So far we have seen so many leagues- the Indian Premier League, the various football leagues and so on….all where we have been spectators, participating with our hearts. Be it for our country, be it for our state. Every time our favored team wins or loses we take it as a personal triumph or a very over- the- top tragedy… so much so that we don’t even spare the poor sportsperson’s girlfriend and go for her jugular if the going is rough!

Now Mr. Kapil Dev has really stirred the imagination…..if all those great sports persons who play with their hearts will stand to lose in this “Naye League “then perhaps  the time has come for all players and maybe spectators too, to grow up beyond  childish emotional tantrums. Maybe, in keeping with India’s makeover in the eyes of the world, our heads will have to rule over our hearts. Grey matter will be on display, leaving no room for sentiments and leaving the heart out completely.

Actually this seems to be just right time for a league to be launched where the contribution is only with  grey matter! This seems to be just what the Doctor ordered…. enough of theatrics, enough of drama. Now is the time for the game to be played with the mind. Just imagine how high the stakes would be if the heart is left out and the game id played by wits and the power of the mind alone. It should be a spectacle worth watching.

What a superb idea!  Now every win or loss will the participants’ very own as decided by their head not heart. Of course a lot of training of the brain too would be required to come out tops in this new league. It will maybe be a big change from the loud histrionics involved in all the sports currently played (especially cricket) which is almost a religion in our country.
The impact of this “not to be played from the heart” new league will be worth watching-will we become less emotional and more “thinking” about our sports? Will this new league garner the same massive following and become a religion like cricket? Will someday parents again start pushing their children towards academia so as to become part of ITL junior?

The future seems really exciting. Something new is always exciting. The question remains however of what kind of intellectual training would be required for this new kind of league? What would be the returns from it? Would it also have a place for betting? If so, again the heart element will come in for gambling is also about gut feeling, intuition and the heart. In this game, the head and brain will have the lead so it will surely set a good precedentand bring about a sea-change in the “league” world. All the best to Mr. Kapil Dev for taking the lead in the “Ek Nayi League”.

An Inside Peek Into the Indiblogger Meet( Gurgaon the 23rd April 2015)

Nautanki Mahal
What can you say about a Smartphone that has it all…perhaps even, beyond all? The launch of the Zenfone2 at Gurgaon on the 23rd May was a big hit! Thanks to Indiblogger and ASUS, most Indibloggers from Delhi and some from as far as Pune and Mumbai had a fantastic time at the launch held at Nautanki  Mahal Gurgaon.

Starting with the delightful introduction by Mr. Jerry  Shen CEO ASUS, and  his heart-touching “Dhanyavads”, on to Mr. Eric Shen Corporate Vice President and Mr. Peter Chang Regional Head ASUS India, we got an in-depth knowledge of the latest  launch from ASUS… the Zenfone2.The icing on the cake however was Robert Jahns, the well-known digital artist and Instagram master who regaled us with the umpteen possibilities of using the Zenfone2 Pixel Master camera.  It was clear that ASUS has managed to bring the incredible to Incredible India. The user friendly features and its extreme technological excellence makes it  a perfect blend of Yin and Yang…..technological finesse and beauty…. be it because of its sleek looks, amazing color palette, ranging from red  to turquoise as well as the ombre range…simply mind-blowing!

Saif Ali Khan
The launch was by Saif Ali Khan. He rose on to the stage on a circular platform surrounded by a bevy of gown- clad beauties in true Nawabi style, to launch this stupendous phone. Famed Bollywood photographer Daboo Ratnani too dropped some pearls about the photographing abilities of the phone.

The foot-tapping numbers by Aditi Singh Sharma of the “Suraj dooba hai yaron” and “Dhoom 3’ fame, against a backdrop of astounding visuals was completely mesmerizing.

Aditi Singh Sharma
Indiblogger Group Selfie
There was palpable excitement in the air; the energy of the young Indibloggers was evident and heightened by the vivacious anchor Anushka Dandekar whose invitation to all to come on to the stage for selfies with Saif Ali Khan almost resulted chaos, quite adeptly prevented  by  Anoop.

Two lucky winners got a Zenfone2 each for their prompt answers, leaving the rest regretting why they hadn’t answered. There was almost a catfight between two  Indibloggers on how many times each had met/ interviewed celebrities…quite a sideshow for the audience to look on at, bemusedly !Others were busy trying to trace the Troll in anticipation of the Rs/-5000 - reward. Wonder who won it?

Some were dressed to kill. Others were dressed comfortably for a day’s outing at Gurgaon’s  Nautanki Mahal. Some came with boyfriends (in buses which broke down again and again), still others were daughter bloggers with mama bloggers or Mama Papa and daughter bloggers/tweeters having a rollicking time together; few were observed eating only ice-cream during the lunch at Culture Gully…hats off to their commitment  for attending a full-day event while on fast.

Culture Gully

Lots of contacts made and networks widened. There were also face-to-face meetings with many whose blogs had been admired online so far.Everyone had a fabulous time and clutching their ASUS goodie bags full of T-Shirts and Sefie Sticks, left the venue smiling, looking forward to another such meet soon.

Look Up

Look up, they say! Be optimistic, they say! Think positive, they also say! But what happens when this” looking up” makes you come down a cropper? Does every cloud, however dark, hide a silver lining?
Recently I was literally following this “look up” maxim to the “T”. Deciding to give in to the cajoling of the head of the house (HOH) , i.e. husband dear and darling daughter(DD), I ventured out  for a brisk evening walk with them. I had donned my walking shoes, put on my headphones, and sailed forth at an energetic pace. It was getting dark but I was determined to enjoy my walk! The HOH and DD quickly outpaced me and, bent upon enjoying my walk, I too continued, chin up, making the most of my walk, in tune with the latest music.
One round of the rugby ground’s periphery was over and I was blithely one-fourth way of the second round when I suddenly stumbled-stars danced before my eyes, my spectacles flew  and my front teeth met the uneven gravel path with a sickening crash! I had literally come a cropper and lay splayed flat, face down, on the walkway!!
Some intuition made my DD turn back suddenly to sense something amiss. It was pretty dark by this time but some sixth sense must have made her turn around just then. She rushed to help me but I brusquely asked her not to touch me. My front teeth had borne the brunt of the fall and felt completely and strangely numb around my mouth – numbness so profound that it seemed that my teeth had been knocked out with the impact, or got fused into my nose. The sensation was horrible. All the other bruises which I may have got did not seem so important but I did want to make sure that I had not broken any bones – my knees, or my elbows.
I gingerly balanced myself on my palms and knees and held the sidewalk boundary stones to haul myself up. DD retrieved and put back my specs on my nose and immediately rang up the HOH who was striding far ahead. He came rushing back and took in the awful sight of rivulets of blood flowing down my gums and lips. By this time I was pretty sure that though my bones elsewhere were intact, all my front teeth had gone – I couldn’t feel them at all!
What was to be done at this time of 8 pm? The nearest hospital, Fortis, referred us to Max hospital which was pretty far, so my husband immediately drove us to the emergency ward of the Army hospital dental Centre. En route, DD rushed home to get my essentials plus lots of ice cubes to soothe my injury. Throughout the entire drive to the hospital the three of us looked aghast at this sudden and unexpected turn of events.
Face still numb, I placed myself in the dental patient’s chair, waiting with bated breath. What would they do? Remove all the four front teeth from a face which God had already made in somewhat of a hurry? My nose had been further flattened and the furrow between the nose and upper lip had disappeared. I was now looking like a true disciple of Shree Hanuman (by the way, it was a Tuesday too).
The doctor, (bless him), tried to shake the affected teeth to check their mobility. With bated breath, we waited for his verdict. He pronounced that there was a crack in the root of one of the incisors. The rest were okay (Yippee!) but would require a splint and a wait of six weeks when a Root Canal would be done. I’ll let you into a secret-one of my upper incisors had always jutted out slightly, giving me a Bugs Bunny look from a certain angle when I smiled. That tooth had automatically aligned with the rest to give me a perfect smile! A cosmetic procedure had been granted by circumstances, suddenly, with some pain.
My fingers are crossed, waiting for the 6 weeks period to be over so that the splints can be removed and I can dazzle the world with my perfect smile. This cloud certainly had a lovely and unexpected silver lining so I’d advise everyone to look up – you never know what good things are in store.

My New Start

Twenty –five years is a long time. A flash-back: rushed mornings, tired evenings; life consciously and neatly segregated into two compartments- office and home. Work rarely came home though the workday often stretched up to 7pm.

Those days Bank jobs were as coveted as they are now. After an Economics honours  degree from a leading Delhi college, the logical aspiration was a Bank Officer’s job.  Marriage to a dashing Air Force officer, a darling daughter, a sunshine son and transfers pan-India  from Bangalore to Pune, Allahabad to Nasik, meant staying in and imbibing the culture, cuisine and ethos of India’s richly diverse states.

Life was fast, life was fun, but the madness of rushing around, trying to do everything left some part of my soul wanting - something was missing. I wanted to be able to stand and stare. Drawing and painting were my childhood passions. I had also loved writing. Now my writing was confined to the “notes for approval of the Competent Authority”. I was simply doing what I had to do, not what I wanted to do.

Cut to 2001: Banking changed; computers came, as did the banks’ Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), since less manpower was needed.  Should I, or should I not, opt for VRS? I was nowhere near the retirement age. VRS meant doing with much less. There would be a vacuum, I knew.

My heart won over my head. I boldly opted for VRS against advice to the contrary from well-meaning people. The initial days were a struggle- from being a “somebody”, I felt reduced to a “stay- at- home nobody”-no entity, no personal identity. I did get my time to stand and stare and slowly realized that there was still much more to life.

I loved the English language and made my rounds of publishers to get work, then got into an organization teaching “spoken” English. Soon I was training school children, working professionals, housewives, foreigners, the nuances of the English language.

It became a win-win situation for me- I was interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and also honing my own skills. I graduated to taking Communication Skills and Personality Development classes and from there to online editing of manuscripts of students seeking admission to foreign universities.

I have been more than adequately compensated in non-materialistic terms- my time is my own, I’m doing what I love, at my own pace. The respect and adulation of my students, the satisfaction of having made a difference to those (who come with aspirations but find expressing themselves in English a stumbling block), cannot be matched with the biggest pay cheque.

I’m glad I took the bold step of opting for VRS. My life has changed for the better and I have not looked back even once.

Eternal Circle

Have you seen the new leaves on Delhi's trees these days? Delhi has the unique distinction of hosting Spring and Autumn together. The shiny, coppery green new leaves of the Jamun, Banyan and Peepul trees, the lime green shoots on the branches of others are breath-taking.

The Gulmohar, which in some months will be a riot of Orange is bursting forth small tendrils of its new foliage from branches which the sunless bleak winter had laid bare.

The Morning Glory on my balcony grill greets me with a burst of its trumpet-like flowers every morning, heralding the start of a beautiful spring morning.

In contrast, heaps of yellowing leaves line the lanes where  some trees have begun their Autumnal Spring dance. These contrasts reinforce the eternal truth that beginnings and endings are both a part of an eternal circle.

Youth and Old Age

Two sharply etched images remain in my subconscious after today’s outing to the Bank and the Post office. One is of an old man, struggling with his walking stick, a bunch of papers in his hand; his thick glasses perched on his nose, straggly sparse grayed white hair, totally engrossed in what the bunch of papers hold.

As usual, my imagination runs riot-has his monthly income scheme matured? Like my mother, is he crediting his grandchildren’s accounts or is he barely able to eke out his sunset years from his carefully saved retirement benefits which he has tried to maximize with his very frugal existence?

Behind my car, there is urgent honking from a white City Honda. As it overtakes me, I see a young lad of around 20 something behind the wheel looking very dashing and impressive. I think of my son driving the family car, rushing ahead, with not a moment to spare.

Wonder whether the child driving the City Honda owns it, or it is papa’s generosity? Also regarding the old gentleman, do his children have time for him? More pertinent is the thought of who is really more dignified and impressive of the two-the one carefully handling his hard earned money or the one dashing about in his fancy car?  Just give it a thought!!

Poetry

Poetry-

Penning of thoughts.

Not rhyming,

Not irrelevant.

Felt from the heart.

Bring forth,

Share the beauty of your thoughts.

Be Happy!

How blessings change with changing times. Earlier, when getting blessings from elders, it

was always “jeete raho” ie live long. Now times are changing and so are the

blessings- it’s now " khush raho" (be happy) !!.

Appropriate isn't it, in these days of long lives due to medical progress?

Happiness is to be treasured more in today’s strife-torn world.

Simplicity

The beauty of simplicity

-no ostentatiousness

-no blinding glare

Just simple

Easily expressed

Easily understood,

Easily shared.

-no wastage of words,

-no wastage of material,

-no confusion in the mind,

-no despoiling the environment.

Simplicity is simply Classic!
